Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used measure to assess whether a person has a healthy body weight for their height. It was developed by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s.

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has limitations. It doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, or distribution of fat. Athletes may have a high BMI due to muscle mass rather than excess fat.

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters (kg/m²). For imperial units, the formula is (weight in pounds / height in inches²) × 703.

What are the BMI categories?

According to WHO and CDC guidelines: Underweight is BMI below 18.5, Normal weight is 18.5-24.9, Overweight is 25-29.9, and Obese is 30 or higher.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI is a general screening tool but may not be accurate for athletes with high muscle mass, elderly individuals, pregnant women, or children. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass. For a comprehensive health assessment, consult a healthcare professional.
